Brain The human brain is more than 60% fat! The majority of fat
in the brain is the type that cannot be
made by the body, but must be supplied
by the diet. The fats essential for
optimal brain activity are the omega-3
fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid
(EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Building Healthy Brain & Eyes
The human brain and the retina of the
eye consist largely of fatty tissue
characterized by long-chain
polyunsaturates. In addition to
providing energy, the fatty acids in our
diet provide important building blocks
for the brain and the retina of the eye.
The brain requires more omega-3 fatty
acids than any other system in the body.
With sufficient quantities of EPA and
DHA in the diet, the membranes of the
brain perform at their peak level, which
is essential for regulating mood,
emotions, and depression. In the absence
of EPA and DHA the brain will choose an
alternate source of lipids such as an
omega 6 or monounsaturated fat which has
very different properties from omega-3s
and could therefore negatively affect
your mental health.
Attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD), Children suffering
from attention-deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD) are inattentive,
impulsive, and hyperactive. A study
conducted by researchers at Purdue
University published in the American
Journal of Nutrition reported that
hyperactive children have lower levels
of key fatty acids in their blood than
do normal children. Their experiment
involved 53 boys 6 to 12 years of age
who suffered from ADHD, but were
otherwise healthy. Analyses showed that
the boys with ADHD had significantly
lower levels of eicosapentaenoic, and
docosahexaenoic acids in their blood.
The hyperactive children suffered more
from symptoms associated with essential
fatty acid deficiency (thirst, frequent
urination, and dry hair and skin) and
were also much more likely to have
asthma and to have had many ear
infections. The researchers conclude
that supplementation with the missing
fatty acids may be a useful treatment
for hyperactivity.
The Immune System is designed
to prevent the penetration of foreign
particles or pollutants into our bodies.
The system knows how to identify any
foreign object that does not bear our
body’s genetic code. The immune system,
or its ability to differentiate between
foreign and regular particles, is often
disrupted. The reasons for immune system
failure have been the subject of
numerous studies over the years. Various
hypotheses have recently been raised
that link the formation or severity of
the failure with excess Omega-6 fatty
acids and a deficiency in Omega-3 fatty
acids. When nutritional imbalance
between the polyunsaturated fatty acids
is severe, the body suffers from
increased inflammation and immune system
failure. As a result, in long-term
treatment, an Omega-3 supplement has
numerous advantages in that it would
facilitate a balance between Omega-3 and
Omega-6.
